turtle hybrids?

megalon May 03, 2008 07:05 PM

ok,i just had the wierdest thing happen yesterday.i had my painted turtles tank break in a cleaning accident(never send a 12 yr old to do a man's job,i guess, haha)and while i was repairing it,i put my painteds in with my spotteds.it took me about 30 min to go to the store and get a new tube of silicone, and when i got back,my male spotted was ALL-OVER my female painted.i wish he would show that much attention to the female spotted.they were going at it off and on for about 2 hours, then the painted went up on the land portion of the tank.i guess he left her alone after that, because he was on on his log this morning, and she was still on land.would this pairing be feasible?if so,would the eggs be viable at all,or are they just too distantly related for it to work?any answers will be appreciated.

That's too funny!

It seems unlikely that you would get any viable eggs out of this pairing, but who knows? Stranger things have happened.

yeah, thats what i figured,i just wanted some different opinions.that turtle will try to climb on anything in his tank.he is flat out insatiable,it seems.but, who knows?the male painted hasn't been showing any interest as far as i've noticed,so,maybe it will work.i'm not too worried about it either way.thanks for replying!

if eggs are laid i would still definetlt incubate them!
you just never know at this point what is possible.
also the resulting offspring could be freakin awesome if the genes fall just right!!
keep us posted.

you better believe it!if,and i mean IF they successfully interbreed, they will intentially be put together a cmonth or 2 after she lays.(i've heard that eastern paints can occasionally double-clutch).worse comes to worse, there's always next year.i'm not terribly optimistic about successful mating, but i'm secretly keeping my fingers crossed,ya know?

I would see no reason they could not produce viable offspring.

If it was a Box turtle you where talking about I could see a few problems it would have.

Spotted Turtles are very similar in body type to painted turtles and they are not to distantly related to have a successful pairing. IMO.

I would think a Bog turtle would be a more likely canditae with a spotted but painted's are not so different in make up where it would be a problem in my opinion. Keep us posted and reintroduce them for a better chance.

i've been re-introducing them(always her into his tank)every 4 or 5 days.he hasn't shown any more interest, though.i've also tried the male painted and the female spotted, but no dice there.as far as a bog turtle goes,it is just too hard to get my hands on 1 here in sc.what happened, happened strictly by accident.but it would be pretty cool if it does work, though.

Well if it is anything like colubrid snakes. It only takes one mating to accomplish a fertile pairing. So make sure she has a suitable place to deposite her eggs and good luck and keep us posted!!!
