Hi! On a trip to Tonopah Nevada (great Basin) we found a baby horned lizard and kept him. just got home and put him in a ten gallon tank. Got online to read about him and realized we can not keep him as he might die if we do. We live in Las Vegas Nevada (Mojave desert) and are wondering can we let him loose in our desert here or does he HAVE TO go back to the great basin area 2 hours north of us? Also if so should we give him some crickets to hold him over at least? We have only had him for 7 hours now. Thanks to anyone who can help us!!!!

Don't feed ANYTHING until you know what you have, and someone can discuss size appropriate prey with you. Babies are notoriously fragile. Check you inbox, I sent you a PM.

Well I am assuming he is a baby, he is no more than two inches long not including his tail. We feel terrible about this. We immediately read as much as we could find on the internet. The last thing we would want is to hurt any creature. We realized immediately that he had to be let go. We just don't know if we can let him go here in our desert. Will the 200 mile difference hurt him? Is he going to be ok going this whole day without food so far? Should my husband collect some ants outside for him right now? I don't know what a PM message is or how to retrieve it. Thanks again! Angela

There's too much to cover right now. No, don't feed him anything yet until we know what species it is and how big it is exactly. You can kill it if you give it the wrong thing. I mean that.
The 200 mile difference very well might matter. That's why I need to see what species it is first. I sent you a private message that you should have gotten in your email account that you used to register here. But, you can go to my site link below and contact me that way too.

thank you so much for your help. I am going to try and send you a picture. My husband just went out in the desert here to collect some ants so we have them on hand just in case he needs them right away. He looked up harvester ants to see what they look like. But i'm not sure what he will come back with. I'm not sure which link is yours, the yahoo, kingsnake, rescue society or which one there are a few. and for some reason I did not get the message in my email. It's jnaogrady@msn.com

Be careful about posting your email in public like that. Spam bots will pick it up that way.

The links are in my signature directly above the HLCS logo. There are 2 of them.
