Best way to disinfect?

xAmorex May 19, 2008 07:54 AM

Hello, I've read that the best way to disinfect cage furnishings is with a 5% bleach solution. Does this hold true with amphibians also? I know they have more sensitive skin then reptiles. I soaked the driftwood in the solution for 15 minutes then soaked it in just water for about an hour. Is this a good idea?

You're on the right track, but I would soak the wood a while longer; throw out the old water and replace it with fresh tapwater every hour or so to get rid of the bleach that has already soaked out.

Another method for disinfecting driftwood is to boil it in a pot of water; if the piece is too large for a pot you can just pour boiling water on it. This way you don't have to worry about bleach residue.

Easiest way is to cook it, but the way you are doing it would be fine as well, just rinse extremely well and let dry well.
