Sores on nose

teaspoon May 25, 2008 03:00 PM

My pair of crested geckos have been together since Jan, but ther're just now starting to have problems. They both have pink spots on their faces, like sores, the scales are missing. They seemed to be healing. the next day, I noticed that the male had gotten his food on his face (or maybe the female walked through the food, and then over him)The day after that the food was gone from his face and the sores were bigger. There arn't any crickets in the cage that could have eaten him. It's possible that it was his mate, but there's no way that she's that hungry. Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone know what i could do? I would rather not separate them because they would have to be in ten gallon tanks and they only just started breeding. maybe the food on his face has nothing to do with it. Could they have injured eachother while mating? They've been together for over four months with no problems until now. I'm confused, any suggestions? Do cresteds fight over food even when there's plenty for both of them? Do you think that putting in two food dishes will help?

The only time I have seen aggression with Cresteds is if their are crickets in the mix and they get defensive and/or confused and will wrestle with one another, or during courtship. The fact that they both have sores on their nose is a little bit worrisome. Pictures would be nice to give some idea of the seriousness. Has anything else changed in the last few weeks? The safest thing to do for your geckos would be to isolate them and let them heal up, however I have seen sores and small abrasions and let them be. They are pretty hardy animals and should heal up fine. Post a picture if you can. Good luck!

I can't post a picture because my only camera is on my phone, and its so blurry, you can't even see to nose sores. The sores/scrapes/cuts, whatever they are, havn't gotten any worse. I don't give them crickets because i give them T-rex crested gecko diet, so i know its not crickets. I recently (a few weeks ago) moved them to a different cage in a different part of the house because the reptile room had been getting to hot for them, so temps went down from 80-85 to 70-75. Ican't think of anything else that might affect them. If the sratches get bigger or worse, I'll probably seperate them.

Just recently my male has developed sores as well. They are dry and not wet or infected looking. In fact they look somewhat like what a lizard would have if he banged his face into the side of the tank. I have however never seen him do this. they heal quickly on their own and i never need to put any antibiotic on them. I'm not sure if i should go to the vet or not because of the non infective nature of the sores. i wish i could help you but i seem to have the same problem and only with my male as well.

I checked on them this morning and the sores are completely healed on the female, can't see scars or anything. The male has one that is small, so he's healing too. Thanks for responding.
