If you had a big enough screen cage could you house multiple male cresteds as well as the giant species- is there some rule of thumb about how much space males need or can they just not be in the same vicinity>?thanks,
(i want a giant but have two baby (unsexed) cresteds and only want one cage-

NO. leachies will EAT all smaller geckos. gargoyles will eat tails and also smaller geckos. some people have kept virgin males together, or same-size crested/gargoyle/sarasinorum together in a large tank with multiple visual barriers and hiding places without incident, but it is strongly advised against due to the inherent risk.

as far as keeping cresteds together, be sure there is no greater than a 3 gram size difference between young geckos; 5 grams for adults. always keep an eye on everyone to be sure there is no bullying or fighting going on.

also, how are you going to keep the humidity up in a screen cage?
you are always going to need a backup tank when you have more than one gecko due to the possibility they will need to be separated for any reason, and for quarantine purposes. if your 2 grow up to be male and female, they will need to be separated as soon as you can determine their sex to avoid premature breeding.

Oic- i guess if i get the bigger species i will need a different cage- i have a backup tank for my juv cresteds but i only thought you needed to seperate them if they are both males?maybe i should just seperate them now (at 4 months) and get it over with- i thought screen cages were pretty conventional and people used misting systems or something-thanks for input-

I have one more thing to add, if you were even thinking about the screen system without having this "misting system or something" worked out then I would say you need to do some more homework and planning for you gecko's sake.

nope- not even considering it- must be a crime to have some [bleep]en imagination though

irts a pretty basic part of reptile husbandry so im not sure exactly where you get off- have you ever kept a chameleon?specis from montane africa and tropical madagascar are kept in screen cages so maybe you should check your facts-

and i was simply projecting- it used to be fun to forecast with otheer people- you really killed my enjoyment of the idea- and-
its reccomended as PREFERABLE in tghe ths series book-thats with manual spraying or not- so try not to be so presumptous-

I'm not saying not to do screen cages, but if you don't have a way of keeping it humid worked out in your head already then I think THATS the problem. Not the screen cage.
And sorry if I "killed your interest" by even suggesting you think about it more.

i agree with you, but i havce seen humidity stay up in screen cages. ive seen wax paper tightly placed around parts of the cage, along with plexiglass being screwed onto the screen, pointed sides out. ive also seen, but im not sure how well itd work, regular plastic wrap used.

Zarula Jun 01, 2008 02:07 PM

Like I said, I'm not saying humidity can't be maintained in screen cages, I just think it should be worked out exactly how it will be maintained, and have a backup plan if it doesn't work. Screen cages are fine if you can manage them, but your system of managing them should be known and not just "something."

ok-thats just semantics- maybe i sounded to blase or something-squashed

zach220 Jun 02, 2008 10:51 AM

i actually just meant something i could make but alas i am technicaly deficent

Definitely NOT! Your cresties will be eaten. By the way, if you are going to spend the few hundred dollars on a single gecko, why not spend a few more and get him a nice cage to himself?
