Krill for Spotteds?

curtis9980 May 31, 2008 03:39 PM

I saw in the classifieds where one guy said, among other things, he feeds his spotteds krill. I have plenty of krill that I feed my saltwater fish, but has anyone heard of or feed krill to their spotteds? It sounds fine, but before I give mine some, I wanted to see what others thought...

dear god,if you want to see the absolutely happiest spotted ever, please give it some krill or shrimp.i presently use freeze-dried,and have used frozen before, too.not only do they adore it(it's my female's favorite food),but it will help bring out the yellows and oranges in their spots.i also drop a dozen or so live grass shrimp in the tank a couple times a week, for exercise(i make them work for the snacks)

Cool, thanks. I figured so. I've always seen the freeze-dried kind in pet stores before. I have frozen, so I put it in the rotation. Thanks again.

Just as you said, both my spotted and my painted devoured the krill. Very exciting that I have something new and different to add to their diet. I'll have to post a pic next time I feed them...

A few pics of the turtles eating their new menu item.

Sorry about the spotted pics: I couldn't get a good angle. And yes, Rocky the painted turtle is eating in a bowl, 'cause, uh, well, he gets a little aggressive at feeding time.

if you get a chance, try live grass shrimp.sometimes the pet store calls them "ghost shrimp",and they can be kinda pricey sometimes, which is why i catch mine.also, have you tried crawdads?mine love them,as well as fiddler crabs(also fresh caught).sometimes, there are benefits to living by charleston.

I was going to say...Not much chance of me catching my own fiddler crabs, ghost shrimp, or crawdads in Big D. All of those sound pretty pricey, and having worked for a tropical fish store for six years, I know ghost shrimp are so pricey most stores won't even purchase them unless special ordered.

About the only thing I "catch" for my turtles are the snails that I scoop out of my freshwater tank, and I just sold that tonight, so I'll have to make some trips to Petsmart and help them thin out their population.
