is she big enough?

woodsman357 Jun 03, 2008 09:09 PM

I have a female rubber boa that is six years old, from the easter slope of the cascade mountains long term wc.I suspect she is the larger moprph, over twenty two inches closer to twenty three inches and weighes 72.65 grams.
is she big enough to breed next year?
If so do i need to hibernate/brumate her?
she has ate like a champ this year, five fuzzies each time fresh killed.she is up to twenty five fuzzies this year alone, hard to believe she held out for over a year before.

ANY COMMENTS?

Woodsman,
By about August of this year, your female needs to be in very robust condition. I suspect for a boa of about 23 inches, she should be at 80 - 90 grams. However, if you haven't obtained a stretched length measurement, I suspect your boas is probably closer to 24 inches in which case it should be upwards of 100 grams or more by August or early Sept.

All boa populations north of Tulare Co. Calif. have proven to be of the large morph. And at 22 inches and above, your females should now be sexually mature. And yes, you need to place her under brumation conditions for probably a couple of months. I leave my boas under brumation from late Oct. to mid to late Feb. for male and into mid to late March for females.

Only 72 grams? After eating 25 fuzzies? She must have been good and skinny after her long fast. Keep on feeding her at least two large fuzzies / small hoppers each and every week from now until September. You should be able to have her up past 150 grams by the end of August if you keep feeding her well.
