What kind of toad is this?

NeoReptiliac Jun 04, 2008 04:54 PM

My brother brought me something Ive never seen today. This toad was found in my brother's pool today by him and he brought it to me. He lives in Georgia and I live in Tennessee. Now Ive never seen a wild toad like this before. It looks almost like a snow morph of the wild brown toads around here that Ive seen. Anyone with any clue what it could be?

It appears to be a Fowler's toad (one of the two common bufonid toad species, along with the American toad, of much of the eastern US) with a drastic pigment condition; whether you would call that leucism, hypomelanism, or something else, I don't know. Nice find!

Wow nice find, very pretty, are you going to try to breed? I would sell it to someone who would. Returning it to the wild would probably have low survival chances considering that guy would get extra attention from predators. It would be interesting to explore and detirmine the genetics. IMO

Well Ive never breed amphibians of any kind before so I honestly wouldnt know where to start. My brother was the one who found it I told him to keep an eye out where he found it at to see if he comes across any more. It may have siblings some where in the area. He said it was in his pool. (which is empty cept for some leaves and rain water on one end ) My guess is since it is a toad it might have been looking to mate. Would be nice to find another like it, perhaps one of its siblings around the area.

great toad and worth money dont get jipped by giving it away or selling it for cheap. If you look in classifieds albino toads are worth money yours is worth more as it look like a leucistic toad

I would agree, leucistic and worth money. But seriously it is too special to just keep as a pet, you should sell it to a breeder, or seriously consider trying to breed it and getting it a normal colored mate and then see if the hets prove out. I would think it would be worth at least $100 maybe a lot more to the right person, but it's only worth what someone will pay. So is it a Southern Toad or a Fowlers Toad?

If you put thumb and first finger on each side just behind the front legs and gently squeeze does it chirp?
