Turtle breeders in New Mexico?

DarkFaery8 Jun 06, 2008 03:59 PM

Hi, first off I was wondering if there are any turtle breeders in New Mexico? Hopefully in the Albuquerque area?
Second, I have a 55 gallon aquarium I was hoping to put the turtle in. I want one that can go in and out of water. What would be a good turtle for me to get? I will, of course, do the necessary research for the kind I will get.

Thanks so much!

Kinosternon (mud turtles) and Sternotherus (musk turtles) do well in a 55 gallon tank. They are strongly aquatic. Some of them will use land areas, and some won't; it just depends on the individual turtle. You could probably keep 2 or 3 in that tank, so long as only one is a male.

The only other turtles that I can think of that would do well in that tank are male map turtles (Graptemys species); they are much smaller than the females and so don't need as much room.

Okay, thanks! Does anyone know of any turtle breeders in New Mexico? Shipping costs are killer these days! :-P

Try Subterrainian Jungle in Albuquerque, 505 255 1043. They have a fair selection on turtles. Also ask about a turtle breeder named Robin Gile.
