Mold In my terrarium!

littleangel77007 Jun 08, 2008 03:57 AM

I need some suggestions. I'm looking in to getting a frog, and I'm trying to set up a terrarium, but I keep running into the same problem--about 4-7 days after I get it set up, everything is covered in white, fuzzy mold. Is there any way to prevent this? I'm using items, such as substrate and accessories, specifically designed for amphib habitats. I've tried a couple different types of substrates, and I've tried different humidity sources (dripper, misting mountain, misting with a spray bottle), but I keep getting mold growth! The only thing I've tried that didn't grow mold was using bark chips and just a dish of water, but then my meter said it was only about 28% humidity in the habitat. Any suggestions? Thanks!

In many cases this mold will finish its life cycle and disappear in a couple of weeks. If this doesn't happen, or you don't want to wait, you can try disinfecting all of the substrate and cage furniture with a strong solution of hydrogen peroxide. The H2O2 will kill most spores and microorganisms, but leaves no lasting residue (it breaks down into water and O2).
