So, I keep my blue tegu in a "new" version of the 4' Vision cage. However, it's frustrating getting aspen bedding in the glass track and he tears up newspaper. I want to give him the best of both worlds by putting newspaper as the primary substrate and then give him a hide box to submerge and emerge out of whenever he desires. I was thinking of getting a dark sterilite box and cutting either an entry way on the top lid or on the side. Anyone have any suggestions/pics of their hide boxes???

Thanks!

I'm not posting a pic of my hide boxes...just a warning! LOL

You know, I wonder if he would continue to rip at the paper anyway, just as a part of tegu behavior. I have a 6ft Vision cage for my B/W and it is a pain when the Cypress gets in the tracks. I just keep picking it out and sweeping the floor. I've offered her a Sterlite tub with a door cut out, but she just continued to dig down in the mulch and climbed on top of the tub to poop on it.

My little B/W likes to sleep in cardboard boxes...cracker boxes, etc. My Colombian chooses to bury under the mulch and sleep beneath her water dish.

Tegus are natural diggers. They will continue to dig regardless. I personally don't like vision cages 1 the substrate gets in the doorway and its too shallow for any serious substrate for ground loving monitor and tegus. I use pure dirt or cypress mulch about 2 ft deep with no hide box since he digs and makes his own little cave as his hide box. I custom made my cage with plywood and 2 by 4s with plexi glass front. Good luck
