breeding question, unusual

mmfh Jun 18, 2008 06:24 AM

I'm very interested in breeding cresteds. In fact i have breed a male and female and currently have 3 healthy babies.....looking into getting a digital camera too, so i can let y'all see them. My questions concerns genetics. Are there any good genetic books out there? or ppl who know genetics?

I've breed a red solid female to a brown dalmation with a white back stripe. So far all the babies are showing a phenotype of brown solid. Is red a recessive colour? are they co-dominant? If i want dalmation babies do i need 2 dalmation parents? I know this question is complex but i'm hoping someone can help me out. Or even if u can't help me out maybe you can lead me in the right direction. Thank you.

Well all baby cresteds are born red or brown and as they get older they change color, most likely that it will develope dalmation spots over time and might be red. Genetics with cresteds are hard and people don't know much about the genetics!! Because suposely some breeder told me that there is no hets. with cresteds, and I don't know if its true or not!! I am starting to breed cresteds too and have one egg about to hatch. Well hope I helped and good luck!!! Melissa

crested geckos are rather polymorphic... variety of pattern and color could occur in the same clutch or across various clutches, so simple recessive type traits are not as evident.

At best, high pattern or colored parents tend to yield best results for pattern or color or both...
