Baby Painted's Diet

paulgauguin Jun 18, 2008 08:22 PM

I've been feeding my baby painted the small reptomin aquatic turtle pellets along with some greens that he barely picks at. Should I be feeding him more live food and shy away from the pellets or is it OK while he's young to feed him the pellets consistently? He's around 2 months old right now.

The pellets are a good staple diet, but offering live food is good too. Guppies, earthworms, crickets, ghost shrimp, scuds, etc. are all good. Goldfish are bad (for everything, not just paints). Painteds generally don't become interested in greens until they're older.

Baby turtles like little earth worms, meal worms, tubiflex worms, flies, mosquitoes...make sure it has plenty of water to feed in. I raised my two turtles from hatchlings. They weren't thrilled with Repto-Min either but now they gobble it up like Pac-Mans. One is three and one is two. Like the previous poster noted, paints don't care too much for greens until they are older-they do enjoy hiding under them though! If you live in a zone that has cold winters you may want to find a pet store or bait shop where you can get worms etc. in the winter months. Good luck and if you've never had a turtle for a pet before you will be amazed at how smart and wonderful they are. You'll see them as little beings with personalities and not just reptiles.

i've only raised 1 painted(a male eastern) out of the all the turtles that i've had,but he eats the same as my others-i make a mix out of reptomin and terrafauna turtle pellets, freeze dried baby shrimp and freeze dried krill, and supplement that with live small crayfish and grass shrimp that i catch myself.the shrimp and krill really fire up the reds and oranges on the skin and shell, too.my spotteds practically glow.
