Crested housing

Zarula Jun 19, 2008 11:53 AM

I was wondering in here if anyone houses a male and female crested together permanently? I have a male and a female, the female is not eating right now so she is in a separate enclosure. It's been suggested though that I separate them permanently because of them breeding. They've never bred, and show no interest in it.
Do you think it would be fine to put them back together after this?
Thank you!

I thought to house my male and female together but my male wouldn't let her rest from his amourous advances and eventually all she did was hide and she stopped eating. I now have them separated. I suppose if u had more then one female, his attentions would be spread around and no one female would be hassled too much. I never actually saw any type of breeding behaviour, i just noticed him chasing her sometimes and mostly her hiding and not eating. Good luck with urs.

A male and female housed together full time will breed. You may not observe them breeding but they will have. Unless they are too young for breeding or the temps are too cool to allow for breeding. (around 70-75 F is considered their cooling temperatures..so they won't breed much if at all in these temps..raise up to 75-80F and they will breed and lay eggs).

It is possible to house males and females together but definitely cool them each year for a couple months, to give the female time to recuperate from egg laying, else she can be bred to death, usually because of calcium crash (calcium become so low suddenly (usually after shelling eggs) her health crashes fast.

Best to house male and female together only to breed...usually a week or two together will be more than enough time to ensure a full seasons worth of fertilized eggs.

What sort of substrate do you use? If you use soil, bed a beast, coconut husk, or other particulate substrates, most likely she has been laying eggs in it...and they have gone unnoticed, unless you regularly clean out all the subsrate, instead of spot cleaning.

I have only had them about a week, and right now they are on paper towels for a bit.

Before this though they were housed together and kept on coco fiber substrate, she never laid eggs and is not egg-bound. I would kind of like to keep this setup, but wouldn't want her to be bred to death as I've heard of it before.

Was wondering if anyone house any other pairs or male and females without them breeding. I will probably keep them together and watch her carefully, and if she starts to lay eggs will separate them at that time.

If you only owned them a week...they wouldn't have a chance to lay eggs..takes about 2-4 weeks between clutches for the female to lay eggs.

Eco-earth certainly can hide all the previous eggs she may have laid.

Right now they are separated due to some stress worries with the female. Also, the eco-earth was all removed before they were given to me, and no eggs were seen. I got the exo-terra they'd been kept in, and now it has paper towels in it, hopefully I'll be putting in some eco earth or reptile carpet soon though.
