Underweight tortoise?

tortoiseluva Jun 24, 2008 12:53 PM

I have a female russian tortoise and it has been raining quite a bit where i live so I have been feeding it spring greens and dandelions indoors. however, when I pick it up, it feels lighter than I expect. I think she was heavier before, and I do not believe I have been over feeding her. Can anyone find an answer to my "problem". I do not think it is urgent, but i do think it is a bit peculiar. Also, just to double check, how much SHOULD a full grown russian weigh? Thanks a lot for the help!!

I would be concerned about a "light" tortoise or a change in diet habit. A healthy tortoise often feels heavy, like a rock of similar size. Joe Heinens' Russian Tortoise site may have a growth chart/weight so you can compare...? Has your tortoise ever been checked for parasites/worms? It might be wise to take a fecal in to an experienced VET/parasitologist, be sure to call and find out exactly how and what sample they require. Sometimes eliminating these pests will result in a dramatic increase in weight and vigor. A change in weight or diet may be a symptom of a problem, you are wise to figure out why. Good luck, Vic H.
