annaisagecko Jun 30, 2008 07:22 PM

Hi, i'm new to the whole salamander thing, i usually just keep geckos but this little guy was a lucky find, so anyways its a marbled salamander and its about two inch's long, i bought it some red worms because thats the closet's thing to earth worms i could find i just gave it two and it ate them both, so should i be feeding as much as it will eat? and if not then how much and how often?

thank you in advice for your info!

Once a week is fine. These salamanders can get overweight quickly. Marbled Salamanders don't do much and live in a relatively low temperature range, so a little food goes a long way.

I have Tiger Salamanders, and sometimes I'll skip a feeding if they still look fat from the previous week's feeding. One thing I'd do if I were you is to add some vitamin/mineral supplement to part of the worm once a month. I do this after the salamander has grabbed the worm and sprinkle the supplement on the end of the worm hanging out of the salamander's mouth.

I don't thinkthey'd like the taste of the vitamins/minerals, but once the worm's in their mouth, they'll continue to eat it.

I agree, but will add that I don't trust redworms (AKA red wrigglers); some people have had health issues with herps that eat redworms. I feed gut-loaded crickets, waxworms, and wild-collected earthworms to my smaller Ambystoma.

ok i hadn't seen that they could eat crickets but thats fine i have them on hand so thats easy, and ill do some digging for earth worms later this week! but to me and idk if i'm right about this but super worms look bigger then it so i don't think it can eat them yet its still pretty small only like two inch's long.
