hatchlings and CGD

mmfh Jul 01, 2008 04:59 PM

How long is it safe to keep hatchlings together and how large of a tupperware should i use? Why did they take the banana powder out of the t-rex crested gecko diet? Is anyone else having a problem with it going bad in about 5 hours?

I'm not sure about the hatchlings question.

As for the CGD, the banana powder isn't gone completely I don't think, just a bit reduced and replaced with rose flavoring, the geckos seemed to really go for that flavor of the two-part diet, so they integrated it into the one-part. Also, what do you mean by "bad"? Does it smell funny? Mine I know gets a little bit of the green color on top but thats just the nutrients separating out because it's been sitting.

I'm not a breeder, so I really can't answer the hatchling question, but as to the CGD, mine always dries out long before going bad. Do you live somewhere exceptionally moldy and moist or something?

I've never had a problem until I started buying the new food. in the past my CGD would just dry up. Now, especially in the baby cages it goes fuzzy like a baby mouse in about 5 hours. Not really giving the babies all that much time to eat. They are in ventilated 8x8 tupperware dishes. 16 holes around the edges. I mist them in the morning and in the evening and have a soda lid filled with water in them as well as a hide. The papertowels in the container arn't moldy and are dry when i mist. Most likely i'm just going to have to learn to live with the problem, i just wondered if others were having the same problem.

Some more ventilation is probably not a bad thing. As for the fuzzy on CGD, I've seen what you describe a few years ago, but that was after a rash of near 100% humidity here and the diet was left out for more than 24 hours.

I would bet there might be some spores on your feeding dish if you are reusing it. Give it a good sanitation in bleach adn water or run it through the dishwasher on hot cycle and heat dry then try again. Also do this with any spoons or other items you use to prepare the diet. Just a thought, might do the trick. Sometimes soap and water aren't enough to get rid of spores.

Good luck!

If you are getting mold that quickly, I would agree that something is contaminated in the enclosure.
One solution I went to is paper cups- They are cheap and you don't need to worry about continueously contaminating the enclosure or spreading something to another enclosure.

If you are misting daily as well, that might be too much humidity. I tend to mist in the evening when they start becoming active and in the mood for a drink of water. However, by the next afternoon/evening the water has all disappeared.
