Nightcrawlers as a staple?

carnifex Jul 03, 2008 05:29 PM

so i'm the guy with spyro, the AWD in the posts called AWD Mouth infection?

i've been trying to move away from his diet of primarily fish as this is unhealthy.

i have had no luck finding a bug that won't escape his tank and promotes a feeding response.

i have found it in nightcrawler earthworms.

my dragon stuffs these worms into his mouth 3 at a time, i've been providing them for the last week.

the results are nonetheless amazing! for one, he hasen't eaten this much in months! for two he's had his first full body shedding in months! he looks like a new lizard!

what i want to know is if nightcrawler earthworms are a good staple food that i can feed everyday untill i can find more bugs he'll eat. he doesn't like kingworms and crickets escape his cage.

the worms have dirt in them, is there a substrate i can keep the worms in that will gutload them with something nutritious?

do worms have any preformed vitamin A?

lol, is there a better place for me to ask these questions as this board is as dead as my grandpa?

here's a pic of his shiny new skin. notice the shed line on his tail, that was his old colors.

where are you getting the night crawlers?...Someone tld me that the ones you buy as bait have stuff in them to plump them up which may be bad for the lizard...I have a Chinese Water Dragon and I fed him those...I stopped though...I drop my dragons crickets in his water bowl...they can't get out and it is fun watching him dive for em...BUT earthworms from a retile feeder supply would be goos...and they are high in nutrition...

yea, the worms are in the little white tub at rite-aid (drugstore) so id imagine thy got that fattener you're talking about.

i started a dubia cockroach colony. God the feeding response i got from a 1.25 inch roach was astounding. Spyro went utterly ape[bleep]. i believe breeding roaches is the key.

he wouldn't eat a soldier fly larva. a lady at a rescue center gave me more insectavore ideas, she got these soldier fly larve from her compost bin. Pic inclosed.

so do you think if i let the worms do their thing in some better soil they'll clean up? or is the bulking agent in the flesh and not so easily gotten out? you prolly don't know the specifics i will continue to reaserch this.

You may try breeding your own worms, feed the ones you raise.
They are high in calcium so a good food item and something they eat in nature.

i must be retarded to have not thought of that!

thanks, also, the dubia roaches are working well. i think a main staple of roaches and earthworms will see spyro healthy for sure!
