Had trouble cleaning the DI viv today

Rosebuds Jul 14, 2008 12:12 PM

because a certain girl and a certain boy just had to be right in the middle of what I was doing! They are so darned curious, and I just wonder how they survive in the wild! These two have been licking my hand when I reach in there from day one, and they are wild caught! I had to literally pick them up and move them to clean. LOL!

Anybody else have super friendly wild caught DIs?

I had a DI one winter that was disturbed from it's sleep. I was feeding it in prep for release in the spring and it was eating out of my hand within a few days. Actually became very interested (anticipation of a feed) in me every time I approached. That was one happy lizard on release day.

So they just think I have food?

Probably DOES mean they think you always have food, and are checking you out by licking to make sure that YOU aren't food! LOL
However, they are friendly curious animals just like the Chucks, and will put their heads out of their crevisses to see who you are and what you are up to. This is why they get caught! I have, over many years time, had Chuckwallas and DIs that were docile and friendly the day they were caught! And I have had some CB babies that were feisty biters from the day they hatched and didn't give it up for three years! I once had a wild caught male, Whitney, who would steam across the carpet when he saw me enter the room and stand on his hind legs ON TOP OF MY FEET like a little Tyrannasaurus, balanced on his tail, and he was so trusting, he'd eat yellow kleenex if I offered it. (I never did let him eat the kleenex, of course).

Do you still have DIs, Maureen? I think, now that I see how precious they are, I will always keep some, but I hope to start a cb trend. And, I'm still waiting on that loveable, friendly chuckie to come along. I know that I will love them as well.

No, Donna, I don't have any DIs at the moment, but next to Chucks, they are my favorite! And when I mentioned "feisty biters", those litte devils were cb Chucks, no DIs. I've never ecountered a Desert Ig that was hostile. Even those that I caught in the wild. They are such sweeties. I should probably get a pair again!
