I generally leave the UV on during daylight hours, and shut it off at night. I doubt the turtle will hide from it; he likely won't even know it's there.
he never comes out of his log. should i take the log out and leave him no hiding spot during the day?
No. Just make a UV basking area available; if he wants it he will use it. The stress of having no hide spot would be much worse than inadequate UV.
