biggest nerodia/diamondback?

skronkykong Jul 17, 2008 03:38 PM

My location is central Oklahoma. At a local pond there is a healthy population of water snakes. There is one huge diamond back I've seen a few times. She is by far the biggest water snake I've ever seen. I have bullsnakes and she was much bigger than my 5' female, as far as girth and headsize. As far as length goes I would say 4' or maybe more.

If there's a chance she's a record I'll try and snatch her up for pics. She needs to learn to be more wary of people anyway! I can't believe none of the white trash that visits the pond have killed her yet.

Also, I was fishing with a plastic frog and a nerodia clamped down on it. I thought it was hooked because I reeled it in all the way to the shore and it didn't take off. But then after a few more jerks the frog ripped off the hook and the snake swam off with its trophy. I hope it didn't actually eat it!

I'm in SW Louisiana and there's nothing down here bigger than diamondbacks (except for a few of the larger Texas Rats that I've seen). I've seen some that were 5' and I've been bit by one that measure just over 4' (that wasn't fun).

Watersnakes make neat pets if you can get the mean out of them and get them to start taking rodents.

That's a big one for sure! The largest reported N. rhombifer was 1260 mm (about 4') SVL. The greens (N. cyclopion and especially N. floridana) get a good bit bigger.

Hey,I'd catch that one, take some good pics and relocate it to aplace where the local idiots would be less likely to find it,or better yet, send it to me where it could live to die happily from old age!!lol. Jeff
