At what age can blue spiny's be sexed?

Rosebuds Jul 20, 2008 12:06 PM

Mine are roughly 4 months old and are already approaching adult size. There are already power plays being exhibited in the viv. I make sure that everyone eats well, but I am concerned that fighting could break out before I know it. So, when and how do I sex these lizards? Do the males develop the classic hemipenal bulges and femeral pores like other species?

Well, this is a really old thread but I have the answer:

Males have a pair of enlarged post anal scales. Females don't have these and never will. These scales are visible from birth (hatching). You can gently examine a tiny baby with a hand held microscope or other such magnifying glass and see these scales on the little males.

We sexed ours after two weeks of life. Had nineteen babies & knew we couldn't keep them all. Look at their little heads. At this age, the males' heads are more "jowly," that is, they aren't tapered at the back like the female's. We kept two, at the time hoping that we had a male and a female based on this observation. They were the runts of the litter, and there was no aggression on their part. We were right in our sexing, and these two became "Laurel" and "Hardy."
