Has anyone heard of any successful captive breedings of either the pacific giant (dicamptodon tenebrosus) or the California giant (D. ensatus)? I'd be very interested in any info on reproduction of these great creatures! thanks!

Reproductive biology of Dicamptodon remains poorly known. What is known is that the eggs take months to hatch and the larvae generally take 2 years or more to transform. These salamanders generally live in cold, running, well oxygenated streams and may require these conditions to breed successfully. The larvae are stream type, with short stubby gills, and they probably require a continuous supply of cold, running, well oxygenated water to survive. These kinds of conditions are not easily duplicated in captivity.
where the heck did you find one i've been looking EVERYWHERE for them? please
I've only found D. ensatus, because they are the species that lives near me. They are fairly common, the larvae are often found in mountain streams with in their range. The adults are harder to find. I've found them by going out with flashlights on raining nights and walking along the streams. Good luck!
