are there pet insectivore snakes?

trex8692 Jul 21, 2008 05:47 PM

just a question out of curiosity: are there any snakes that are kinda small (can fit a 10 gal.) and eat insects? are they commonly available?

also as a side question are any of these even remotely handleable?

thanks guys

Shovel-nosed snakes, Chionactis occipitalis, have been available on the kingsnake snake classifieds lately. They do well on gutloaded supplemented crickets. They're noctural burrowers, but they will come out in the evening to chase down their crickets. They don't tolerate handling well, but are interesting little snakes if you're willing to have a "hands off" snake, that spends most of its time under the sand.

Here's mine:

If you're willing to go to a bit larger tank, the rough green snake would fit the bill....

If you broaden your definition of "insectivore" to include snakes that eat worms, there's garter, DeKay's and lined snakes. Here's a DeKay's snake I found yesterday.
