Sight Problems from Albinism?

jazmaniandevil Jul 24, 2008 05:23 PM

Is it true that albino snakes tend to have vision problems? I'm trying to solve why my nearly yearling albino thayeri x nelsoni x pueblan is such a freaker. He's okay with REALLY slow movements, but I tend to see that he only picks up on movement and doesn't investigate at all like my grey banded. Having half the sight of a normal snake seems like a good explanation. I don't knowk, it may just be the milksnake in him, but he has some size and should have reasonably calmed a bit by now....

P.S. I'm pretty new to this, so go easy on me! I have read a considerable amount about colubrids, including most of the king milk and hybrid forums.

Hi there,

I've never heard anything about albino snakes (of any kind) or any albino animal for that matter having vision problems because of the albinism. If you are concerned you could take your snake to a vet, it could be a problem with the actual eye underneath the lens causing the behavior. It could also just be the way the snake is, I've heard a lot of Milk snakes tend to be little spazzes, my boyfriends sure is.

I wish you well!

Albino people often have vision problems. It makes sense that your snake would too.

Albino red eared sliders are known for having vision problems. I can attest to that personally. By and large I've found albino cal kings to be snappier than non albinos. Just my observation.
