Blue racers in MA?

IdoTHATforme Jul 26, 2008 02:29 PM

Is it normal for black racers in the MA area to have a hint of blue on their sides? Found one last week about 3 feet long and there is a distinct blue color between the black and the white belly on the front half of the snake. It shed two days after i caught it and its still blue!!

Where is MA did you find this 'blue' racer. Im also in MA and never seen any blue ones. Actually the first one I ever caught was last fall. It was over 5ft. I put it down for a second to see how fast they are and it was gone. Way to fast to catch.

I found this blue-ish racer at the cape cod canal. as a park ranger I see quite a few snakes in the area. The other day i caught one that was just shy under 6 feet long. those rip rap rocks provide great shelter as well as a constant supply of rats.

I grew up in southeast Massachusetts in the Randolph area, those with blue along the sides were not uncommon at all. Do you have any photos to post? I miss those huge racers, the southern's are no where near as beefy. The northerns are damn formidable. I always wondered why I laid a hand on them as they turn around to bite the crap out of you. What an attitude
