Can common snappers eat small bluegills?

mikesnake Jul 26, 2008 09:04 PM

I have two 10 inch common snappers and I was wondering if it's okay to feed them small bluegills/sunfish? I'm talking real small ones I would legally catch in a cast net, two inches at the most. I'm sure they eat them in the wild, I'm just wondering about the spiny fins. Also, can they live together in a 300 gallon plastic Rubbermaid stock tank? They're currently separate but I would love to put 'em together if it's okay. Thanks!

as big as your snappers are,i would'nt be too terribly worried about the fin spines on a 2" brim, you're talking about a spine that's around a 1/4" long or so.i used to feed 2" brim,(for all you guys up north,a brim is virtually any sunfish;bluegills, warmouth, stumpknockers, etc),to my matamata and my last ally snapper, which were about 6" at the time.i never had a problem with spine punctures,i guess a snapper's skin is really thick.
