New Dumerils HELP!

TurkishRoyal Jul 29, 2008 09:55 AM

I just got a new dumerils when it was just two days old. It is absolutely beautiful with distinct pink markings all down the side. However, I have had the boa for almost three weeks and it still hasn't eaten. My question is whether or not this is common and if anyone has any tips to get him to eat.

Thanks!

From the litter we have had, this seems to be common. One of the babies still hasn't eaten, and they are over a month old. Are you trying live food? The rest of our litter will only eat live prey right now. What are you trying? Perhaps you could ask the person that you purchased it from. We personally won't sell an animal until it is eating consistently. It seems to help avoid problems down the road. Good Luck to you!

Currently, I am trying live pinkies at night. However, he seems less than interested.

How big is this baby? Ours are eating Hopper mice. They were born June 20, 2008. You may want to try a Hopper mouse, or a pinkie rat. Sometimes they decide what they want to eat, and we have to defer to their wishes.

My boa is currently 18" SVL, 21" total, he was born on July 11th, 2008.

I would first try a crawler mouse, they seem to prefer mice over most available food sources. These are alive and have fur but yet are not at a stage where they will damage the snake if left over night. The crawl around but yet will not bit your baby snake.

Make sure a secure hide box is available as well. Keep the snake at the proper temps as well. Low 80's (to 84).

Keep us posted to try more options.

also most of my babies ate live mouse crawlers during the day.
