I've seen some mixed information about what water temperature Spotted Turtles should be kept at. I've seen some caresheets describing how important it is that the water is cool (low 70's) and others that recommend mid to upper 70's. I believe much of this is coming from the thinking that Spotteds are typically cool thriving species most active in Spring. Its often noted that Spotteds are uncommonly seen during summer months (and often aestivate). However, the species ranges from Canada to Florida, so warmer temperatures are obviously not prohibitory. Moreover, water temps fluctuate widely in the wild. Setting aside breeding cycles and genetic adaptations to regional conditions, what water temp is truly ideal?
There probably is no one answer to this question, I'm just curious what others are keeping their enclosures at. Since outdoor enclosures are most ideal it stands to reason that moderate fluctuation in temperatures is generally a good thing (small bodies of water would obviously fluctuate much more than extensive bogs/wetlands).
Anyone experienced problems from keeping water temps consistently too low (upper respiratory infections?) or too high? Some of this probably depends on the difference between the water temp and the air temp. Of course, water temps and growth rates could be a whole 'nother discussion!
