Mites in FF cultures?

upstatenypets Aug 01, 2008 12:12 AM

What do the mites in the cultures look like? Are they easily visible or almost microscopic? What color do they tend to be? What is something that I could use if a mite problem arises? (that won't kill the flies) Any info would be appreciated. Just trying to get facts straight before buying my first pair of Darts. (like to know what to look out for) Thanks!

For those who don't have 20/20 vision or better they are pretty impossible to see withouth glasses. I have good vision and it still takes a few seconds of starring at the culture to see them. For the most part they are smaller than the eye of a needle, so you just look for movement. If they aren't moving it's pretty hard to see. They are clear, and are usually crawling on the top of the ff lid. They are the typical mites, but there are occasionally red mites that find their way onto the cultures as well. To treat it I just start over with a fresh culture and make sure I have fresh supplies and a clean area to prepare the cultures. If you don't want to do this there are "no pest" strips, I have no experience with these so cannot verify thier effectiveness, but I've heard they work.
