Edible Flowers?

Rosebuds Aug 01, 2008 09:25 AM

My field is full of them! Can I feed these to the lizards?

Any idea on what they are exactly? They don't look familiar to me, but somebody else may know. I would imagine the stems are no good, just the flower pedals themselves

Unidentified flowers can be deadly. I wouldn't test those waters.

I posted them in the chuck forum, and a trusted member identified them and gave the thumbs up, flowers and foliage.

I would not trust just one opinion, even if it's someone you feel is reliable, especially since they can't actually see the plant. Photos can be hard to judge by - even really good ones. I would wait until you can verify this opinion with at least one other source, maybe more. See if you can find a Master Gardener in your area to do an ID for you.

Actually, I looked both up myself after he identified them, and he was dead on. They are exactly what he said they are, Gaura and Liatris. Since the Liatric is considered medicinal, I will avoid it, but the Gaura is completely safe. Now that doesn't mean my herbivores will actually EAT them . . .

I have never heard of anyone feeding Gaura to a Uro. You may want to research that a bit before feeding it to yours, just to be sure.

I did a brief search on 3 different forums, and nothing has come up at all. If it were me I wouldn't feed it at all, but you should probably do a good in-depth search to find out more.
