Staple diet of Phoenix Worms?

kherp Aug 01, 2008 06:10 PM

Hi All! I have a Panther Trio and I am having some people take care of them when I go on vacation. Has anyone ever used phoenix worms for a staple? Do you think it would be ok to do for a week? The people I'm having watch them aren't very comfortable dealing with crickets. I appreciate your help in advance!

Yes, the chameleons should survive a week on this limited diet. But perhaps you could mix it up just a little with butterworms or even mealworms? IMHO Soldier Fly Larva (Phoenix worms) are much more unpleasant than most the other larval options available.

What do you mean by "unpleasant"? Mealworms would be a good option too. I hadn't thought of that.

I just think they (phoneix worms aka BSF larva) are gross, that's all.

BTW I wouldnt feed my chams a diet of only mealworms for any length of time either. Especially if your pet sitter isnt comfortable sorting through a pile of mealworms to select only soft, freshly moulted ones (as the older ones are tougher to digest). But if you could offer the phoenix larva as well as mealworms, butterworms, even a wax worm or two - wouldnt your chameleon be happier? I would guess your pet sitter, if comfortable with phoenix larva, would be comfortable with other larva. I'm assuming its the legs that bothers you pet sitter regarding crickets and such?
