Yep,looks like a northern to me! That's cool stuff, you have a little eco system in your yard,Priceless!! Take care!, Jeff
What do you think it's eating? Do you have frogs, toads, tadpoles or small fish around? For it to stick around that long it would need a food source. I'd sure like a "backyrad snake" like that!

Third Eye
I found some pics of the snake from last year, with the turtle.
Last year I was putting feeder gold fish in the pond for the turtle and I assume the snake was wiping them out. All except the 2 giant goldfish that are still surviving. I take the gold fish and the turtle in for the winter and put them back out there in spring. I have not put any other fish in the pond since. We do have alot of frogs around here, as well as other snakes I assume are garters...they are green with a yellow stripe and they are in the grass in the back yard. I wonder if she eats other snakes ? I didnt think the snake was there this year, I didnt see her all summer, though I did see the holes. I actually saw baby snakes come out at first about a month ago and I just assumed they all went down the stream that is across the road. But, for about 3 weeks now the snake has been in the water or basking everyday so I guess she isnt going the way of the stream anytime soon. During the winter I drain the pond and cover it with plywood to keep the snow out and there is about an 8 inch space that collects leaves and such I guess insulate her pretty well. So far she hasnt bothered me so I dont bother her...and yeah it is pretty cool

She could be eating these frogs

But of course she didnt eat that frog. That pic was 3 years ago, a year before the snake showed up. But like the snake, that frog wanted to stay too. It was relocated to a bigger lake for the winter after spending the summer getting fat and it hasnt been seen since
