Phylodryas mattogrossensis

viandy Aug 03, 2008 06:11 PM

Hello,
Thought I would post this here, see if anyone has more information on these. I got it at a reptile show Saturday. The seller didn't have any information on it, just thought it was rear fanged. I was pretty sure it was Phylodryas so I took the chance. A post on the "what snake is this?" forum tells me that it's P.mattogrossensis. I usually give them a week to settle in, but gave this one a pinkie in the container I purchased it in. I looked back a few minutes later and the pink was being swallowed.
I'm setting it up like Baron's racers are supposed to be. I'm not big on handling, especially arboreals, I plan to treat it like I do my Trimeseurus. I realize it isn't nearly as toxic, but I think this is less stressful for the snake and helps avoid a "it wasn't supposed to be this hot" scenario.
Would be glad for any advice anyone has on these and to hear from others who keep them.
Thanks,
Andy

Hi,
as I posted on gallery, this is certainly not a Philodryas mattogrossensis. Probably is some kind of the african genus Psammophis, also rear-fanged.

Oh, it seemed to match so well. But I understand that comparing a snake to photos is not very exact. Thank you for the correction, I'll check what you said and continue to try to find information about it.

I had a Philodryas mattogrossensis and you don't, I can tell you that. Like said before, it's probably an animal of the Psammophis genus. Maybe P.sibilans or P.orientalis. It requires another way of keeping than Philodryas, so do some reading, I suggest.

Good luck!
Chris

Thank you!
Sort of tough to make a transition from a species I can find little information about to one I can very little about the genus. It does eat rodents, that I'm certainly glad of. I have looked over the photos and can find and have ruled out several of them. Lots of observation required now, and research.
Anyone with husbandry tips, please chime in.

I like the idea of the avoiding "it wasn't supposed to be this hot" scenario. I think we can all appreciate it.
