Before your post I had never really been drawn to this species. That is absolutely beautiful. Did you find it yourself or did someone else find it? It will be very interesting to see what happens when you cross the offspring together...
Someone was asking about Storeria morphs on here a while back, maybe it was Wayne. In either case Wayne will be very interested.
The person's name who collected the snake is Dan Guy.
He still has her.
He offered me the babies, as I'm super interested in breeding them together.
Hopefully he can maintain the snake successfully. I spent a good while talking to him on the phone telling him what to do and what not to do, it'd be a shame to see that thing go to waste.
And when it comes to morphs...
There was a baby albino found in Georgia last year.
It was released where it was found.

OMG!!! yes Wayne is very interested, and I agree with Mike, I hope all is well and stays well.
Hey Mike, I have a fully Melanistic occipitomaculata (even it's belly is black as coal) on the way.
A friend found it while herping.
If you would like I have a couple photos.

Wayne

I have seen some really dark ones.

Melanistic Red Belly Snake
Also Mike, I would like to also point out to you, Let's keep an open dialog going, there is not a lot of us who consider the wee little ones of any significance.
But if your going to condecend every time I try to talk to you, it makes it hard to continue.
That is one reason I want to attempt breeding this black beauty,
No one seems all that interested in doing much with these.
I can go on line and order almost anything Melanistic, snow, piebald or otherwise, but not a Storeria!

A little off topic but here is a reference about some "partial albino" red-bellied snakes found in VT. I hadn't even heard of this (living in VT) until just a few minutes ago when I did a search for melanistic red-bellied snake and it was the first result!
Link
That snake isn't rare...
It's just a color phase...
Technically not melanistic.

Wayne that is a neat looking redbelly. I have found many redbellies over the years, tan ones, gray ones, black ones, striped ones, red bellies, orange bellies, even one dull yellow belly, but never one with a black belly. The field guide I have does say "a few are black, and in extreme cases the belly may be blue-black". Very nice.

I've never seen nor heard of a black one nor a red one like that pic.......
sweet both they are.........

The choice of substrate, and that water bother me.
Sand is a big NO NO, I certainly hope this gal is not being fed in there, Sand will stick to slugs and worms like glue.

I'm assuming they must have been born with normal coloring, right? Or Not! How does that work anyway?...and whats the procedure for producing more Leucistics from this one? Raise the babies and breed them to the mother??? Great to see it! Nice lookin little snake. TJ.
TJ, the babies came out normal colored. Meaning the mother bred with a normal brown snake without the leucistic gene in the wild.
To produce more leucistics you could breed the babies back to each other, or to the mother, all the babies would technically have the leucistic trait.

I hate to think it...but is it legal in NJ to take these from the wild?
if you put time in them only to have DNR or whatever NJ has to come to your home, take them, and arrest you....even if you sold it to people in other states....
kinda like they took the leucistic hognoses from people all over the place...
......and this is now a one of a kind snake with photo ID of it on file......
the babies are brown......
.......LOL..........

I imagine if the person who has the snake called the authorities on himself than it would be a problem lol
I am drooling all over this thread!! Nice snakes!!
The leucistic is very nice!! I believe Waynes snake to be a true Melanistic...
And the red is super nice too!
I agree with Wayne. The sand and water bother me as well. Doesn't seem at all safe.
That's pretty darn cool Mike,.....also, have you seen the crazy "Calico" leucistic corn that was recently caught in South Carolina?,.....that thing is really unbelievable!!
Good luck with producing more of those leucy DeKay's!
