Red Eared Slider and Live food

beezer666 Aug 09, 2008 02:26 AM

I have a HUGE red eared slider, and by huge I mean none of the exotic Vets in my area or anyone I have talked to have ever seen a red eared slider as large as mine. He gets fed a diet of live feeder fish and I am at a loss as too how much he should get. He can eat up to 5-6 fish per day if we let him which I was told by my vets was outrageous but they were not sure if this was too many for his size. So, I am curious to see if anyone has a suggestion as to how many fish I should be feeding my turtle. Thanks

do you have pictures? did your vet say the turtle was overweight or just really large? if its just a big healthy turtle eating lots of fish then i dont think there would be a problem, but if its overweight then yeah something needs to be changed in its diet.

If it's that large vary its diet. Feed it some veggies, ie., green, leafy lettuce, chopped carrots, apple, corn, etc. It sounds like a prize turtle, as some are quite amazing survivors and very strong.

But as for the number of fish, feed it 3-4 every other day.

Like the others have said, try lessening the fish and moving into some veggies!
Mine like collared greens and carrots. Every few days or so.
