breeding panthers ?

edtsc Aug 10, 2008 11:44 AM

my male panther at 6,7,8 months old was a breeding fool,he bred one female that has had 3 clutchs from that one time, the first two are all good so far but the third only has 8 of 31 good eggs,so im thinking she is running out of stored sperm, the problem is since the first breeding when she got her gravid colors she has never lost them, could this be why my male wont try to breed her?infact he wont try with any of my females. he only does a little head bobbing when they are out in the sun.now at 12 months old when i put the females in his cage its like he doesnt even see them.would changeing there light cycle get them in the mood?

IMHO you shouldnt breed them before they're at least a year old.
I've had a male that went through phases, sometimes interested, sometimes not. And yes, the receptivity (or lack thereof) of the female plays an important role

first off im glad to see someone in this forum its dead, anyway you said the female being receptive may have something to do with it,one of my females has had four clutchs since march they were 24,28,31,32 of these the first two seem to be doing great,of the third clutch i lost 23 eggs after two weeks, the fourth all went bad after two weeks,my guess is she was useing retained sperm but since im getting bad eggs is she running out?i need him to breed her so i will not get more bad clutches, her health is great all my critters are weighed every tuesday and females are weighed after they lay,she continues to way more after laying than she did the last time.any advice? thanks!

Hi
Yes I'd say you've got it right - she's run out and will need to be bred /mated again in order to produce viable eggs.
As to his recent reluctance or dissinterest, hard to fix that. I've had one male who never did get into the mood. Others dance at the mere idea of a female shadow. Id suggest all you can do is keep trying to introduce them. Perhaps have him go to her cage, then next time her to go his. But separate of course if there is aggression or stress. I'm not an expert, having only bred my panthers a few times. I was more interested in trying to get my females to lay fewer eggs, rather than producing more babies. Babies are a lot of work! LOL Do you check out chameleonsforums dot com? Lots of knowledgable people on there. Some on here too of course, possible some of the same, but like you said this one gets less traffic.
