I'm surprised you got some of them eating so quickly, nice work! I've never tried newborn browns but the red-bellied babies I worked with a few years back took forever to get started.

Congrats! I found a Dekayi on August 2nd, she had 9 babies on the 6th, I have tried small earthworms cut into pieces and baby crickets and they haven't eaten a thing. Where would I find garden slugs small enough for thier little heads?

dekaybrown Aug 19, 2008 03:15 PM

First off, ditz the crickets, Dekay snakes will not eat crickets.

We find tiny slugs at dusk under leaves, rocks and crawling on blades of grass.

In a pinch, it sounds gross, but take a single edge razor blade and chop up an adult slug.

It is the scent that triggers feeding.

I have always "tease feed" my dekays by placing the slug on the end of a toothpick, and slowly jiggling it in their faces.

If you need any more help, feel free to contact me.

Honestly I think you're breaking new ground on the brown snakes. I strongly encourage you to write up an article for Reptiles Magazine. Little things like that toothpick trick strike me as brilliant after my own frustrating attempts to raise baby browns.

Thanks again,
Billy

see, that's the sort of thing I was talking about in my email about how others can benefit from the things you have learned by sticking around

DMong Aug 22, 2008 07:34 PM

I see you're quite the Dekay's "guru" over here..LOL!

Yeah, I have to use my imagination, and do unconventional stuff sometimes to get results with certain animals that I have too from time to time. Glad to see you have a "knack" for those little guys,....I knew you did!

Seriously though,...you can't fool me,....I know it's really those cinnamon flavored toothpicks you "scewer" the slugs with that the tiny snakes really crave!..LOL!
