Frogs in Pond- Is Winter ok?

natethegreat Aug 19, 2008 07:06 PM

I live in Montana (where it can get to -20), and have 5 frogs in a pond 3 feet deep, with just a liner, no mud or anything. There will be plants with soil in the pots, however. In the winter, I'll have a heater that will keep a portion of the pond free of ice. What I'm wondering is if the frogs will be able to do ok in winter.

Thank you!

They are Columbian Spotted Frogs.

imo its a little too risky, they need substrate to hibernate.you could put them in a tank inside your house for the winter.im not an expert so i hope somone else posts.if its a pond you have bull, chicken, pickerel or leopard frogs right.

Well, bullfrogs do not hibernate in substrate, they do it at the bottom of the pond. As for the others, I really do not know. Thisis why I asked what species.

Rana luteiventris are found in deep enough water that it does not freeze all the way. If you have a heater to keep the pond from freezing then you should have no problem. Also if they ocur where you are naturally, then I wouldn't worry too much about them, and let nature do it's thing.
