Egyptian Green Toad Sounds

toadytoadgirl Aug 20, 2008 06:00 PM

I got an Egyptian green toad from Reptilecity.com it's supposed to be a female but it's been 'singing.' Not a lot but she'll sit in her water dish at night and make little chirpy noises. I've always heard that female toads are silent, is this not true? And if not why would she be making these sounds?

That is correct. Only males make advertisement calls to attract females. Females can make sounds, but they do not make advertisement calls. Both males and females will make protest calls if a male attempts amplexus. Males will protest for obvious reasons and females will protest if they are not ready to lay eggs. So, if you have one toad and it is calling, it is most likely a male.
