What does everyone use for substrate for their water dragons? I am planning on getting a baby one soon. I do not like to use like reptile carpet since i think it is a pain to clean and I would like the natural setting where they can dig and things and helps keep humidity up. I thought about using just topsoil sand mixture? I have heard bed a beast but dont really see it round my way all the brick stuff we have here is eco earth cocunut fider and like forest floor with the wood chips. What are peoples opinions and substrate choices?

I just have the entire bottom of the enclosure with water, and tons and tons of branches and dritwood comming out of the water.

but fo a baby wouldnt he drown and what if it ends up being a female and needs to lay eggs? I have seen some tanks set up like that and it looks awsome just wondering.

if he's a baby just dont make water deeper than 4ish inches, they are good swimmers and if they are healthy they shouldn't drown, especially if there's a lot of branches comming out of the water. do you have a male? i would only worry about egg binding when you get a pair and they are adults. if you do get a pair you can set up something with a tupperwear box on a shelf (just need some great stuff, silicone and dirt).

I do not have one yet I am looking into getting one but just doing the research before I get one. What kind of branches do you use? Do you have pictures of your setup?

good for you for doing your research! soooo many people wait till' the last minute and it usually doesn't turn out so well. i have kept baby dragons and adult dragons and they both do well in this type of set up. i usually put a small whisper filter in there to keep the water clean, but the primary way to keep the water clean is water changes.

for wood, i just go outside and look for pieces that look like they will not rot. driftwood is really the best to use, i get a bunch of peices and some thick short branches. then i hose them off (better to do that outside) and bake them for 30 minutes at 350 or 400. i think i have pics, you can email me at otis07_@hotmail.com and i can send them to ya.
