Safe fruits

gregory_t Sep 01, 2008 11:07 PM

Hi,

I'm sorry if this has been asked in the past, but I find this forum software near impossible to perform a search within a particular forum.

What are some safe fruits to feed a baby Uro? Is it okay to mix in a bit of fruit every day along with the greens I'm currently feeding her (endive, bok choy, escarole, collards). Also, she loves dandelion blooms, and I'm feeding her one bloom each day. I was able to collect a few hundred blooms and have them frozen, so they should last me until spring time when they'll be more plentiful in my yard.

You can feed a bunch of different fruits, off the top of my head I can't think of anything other then mango, squash, seedless grapes... these should not be used as an everyday food though, just as treats.

Also, keep the bok choy to a rotated treat as well, it shouldn't be used as a staple. Endive, escarole, chickory are great staples along with dandelion greens when they are available.

I would also be careful about feeding the dandelion flowers from the yard, they need to be 100% pesticide, herbicide free and not be from the front lawn as they could contain fumes from car exhaust. Hope that helps a bit.

The best fruits nutritionally speaking are things like mango, papaya, and figs. But fruit should definitely be a treat only - very small amounts - as they're high sugar. You can also offer vegetables (besides greens) like shredded butternut squash, parsnips, green beans, etc, to fill out the diet. Then there's the dry goodies that they love: lentils, finch seed, dry grasses, bee pollen granules, even good quality juvie ig pellets, etc, though these should also be smallish amounts.
