Texas Snakes vs Texas Snakes-Field Guide

tecuancoatl Sep 10, 2008 12:23 PM

So how much more in-depth is the Texas Snakes (Werler & Dixon) Hardcover compared to the Field Guide version? I have the field guide, and though I do like it, I was rather surprised to find that the diet information of the snakes was missing. How that happened is beyond me, but I hear that the hardcover does a pretty good job of describing the species found here in Texas. I'm wondering whether it's worth it to buy that book, seeing that i have the field guide. Any other suggestions related to Texas snakes (and other herps) or those of the Southwest are also appreciated. Thanks.

It is about like comparing a dial-up connection to a dsl connection or comparing a Volkswagen to a BMW. Seriously though, I own both books and the "Texas Snakes" is much more comprehensive than the "Field Guide" version. The Feld Gude version is OK to stick in your clove compartment or your back pack, while the "Texas Snakes" is best suited for your bookshelf. I find myself referrng to "Texas Snakes" on a daily basis, while the Field Guide version seldom gets opened.
