First baby Dumeril's

wvherp Sep 12, 2008 06:14 PM

Boys and girls, I just got my first Dumeril's yesterday, a week old newborn. I have about a dozen colubrids whom I think are beautiful, but, honestly, I am speechless looking at this boa. God got it right with these beauties!

I can't seem to put her down, she is so calm and gorgeous. Is it possible for me to handle her too much? I know I need to get her acclimated to her environment as I have done with my other snakes. Usually I don't even look at my new snakes for a week, but man, I just can't keep my hands off of her!

Enjoy your weekend!

Congrats on your new Dum. They are awesome snakes I'm lucky enough to have two of them. You should let it settle in for a week or two even though everything seems good. Just my 2 cents enjoy your new addition post some pics. when you can.

CONGRATS on the Dum!!

I wouldn't handle the snake very much for the first couple of weeks. With it only being a week old you can stress it pretty easily. In all honestly you should have bought a baby that had already shed at least once and fed a couple of times. It is always risky buying any kind of baby snake that hasn't shed and fed yet.

I would limit handling to just the amount of time it takes to remove the snake from the cage for cleaning and then putting it back in. A couple of minutes tops, until it has shed and fed a couple of times.
