i finally got it to eat tonight! but i dont know if it is nocturnal and what does he eat other then pellets. Finally, how do you know what gender he/she is. one more thing why wont he come out of the water

Most softshell turtles don't usually bask out of water(save big females). Make some sort of area under the heat light in the water,like a glad container or such filled with sand. Place it on top of some rocks under the heat light but still submerged. It should bask in this setup.
