hand feeding?

roxydementia Oct 03, 2008 12:24 PM

when i bought my cresteds they were very tiny and the breeder said i should put a drop of food on the nose to be sure they eat, its been months now and ive backed off to every other day or so, am i spoiling them? is this needed or is this just something she wanted while they ajusted?
any other hints would be helpfull!

I don't know why she would have you hand feed them. How long have you been doing this? How old are they? Too much hand/force feeding can lead to VERY picky eaters, and then you have to do it the rest of their life. Generally geckos won't let themselves starve and will eat food when they need, except maybe not now. You also don't know how much you might be over-feeding them. I would stop hand feeding them and see how they do when you just set food out.
If you have them on paper towels (which you should for juvies) then you can just set food out and monitor pooping, if somethings coming out it means somethings going in, even if you don't see any visible food missing from the bowl.

i did it every night when i first got them and have been backing off slowly, they are growing and all but one is doing awsome, i pay more attn to that one. ive got them on paper towels with just a light coating of moss. im so used to leos and fat tails they seem thin but they seem to be eating ok, and pooping plenty, ill keep backing off and see how they do, thanks for the advice!!

are you just feeding cgd? or insects too? i feed my geckos 3 times a week, cgd insects cgd. its also best that if theyre not seperated, to seperate them, at least for feeding; especially the one you said wasnt doing that well. as was stated, if its coming out, its going in.
