texasluv Oct 06, 2008 12:20 AM

I have 4 Juv. leopard tortoises that live indoors and want to change their substrate. right now i have them on rabbit food pellets and i dont like it and want to have something diff. i have read about many diff. substrates i can use but i really want to knoe what the best is. i was thinking about getting a square patch of grass to put on the side where the food would be then sand on the side where they would sleep. any ideas?

Thanks, Texasluv

Go to your local Wal-Mart, Grab a bag of there cheapest garden soil. Make sure this soil has no fertilizer in it. if its the cheapest brand it probably wont. Take it home and dampen it if its is not damp already and use just that. I use this for my younger Sulcatas and leopards and it works great and costs just over a buck for a 20lb bag. Sand and rabbit pellets are far to dry and really should not be used. Sulcatas and torts require more humidity than many realize. The research to confirm this is popping up all over the place. I keep my soil damp yet not wet. You could even plant your grass right on this soil. When you feel the soil is old just replace it with another $1 bag and your good for another month.
