When to put greens together ?

lophius Oct 06, 2008 07:11 AM

I am looking for a little advice -

I have a 13.5ft female green - she is approximately 5 years old, I also have a 9ft male who is 7 years old.

I currently house the animals separately but would like to introduce them to one another with a view to them breeding.

Both are great eaters although I expect the male to go off food within in the next 4 weeks - which he has done for the past 3 years - not beginning to feed again until march.

Is now a suitable time to introduce them? How should I prepare the animals - do I need to feed the female ? shall I introduce the male to the female, or vice versa? the female is a little territorial - I did briefly house the two together earlier this year.

I also have another male that is 3 years old and approximately 6ft long - should I introduce him at the same time?

thanks

carl

Carl,
This pair would be sexually mature at this size and age, but it would be critical that the female has good body weight. Do you have a way of weighing this female? Greens are spring breeders and should be introduced in the late winter or early spring. Photoperiod and temp reductions before introduction will help cycle the reproductive systems. Males are usually introduced to females although the importance of this is not well known. The smaller male probably will not be necessary, but that would be your choice, and his maturity would be borderline at that age and length. Let us know how it goes.
