Baby Anacondas

Jud McClanahan Oct 22, 2008 01:19 AM

One of the females Kelly and I produced in 2001 just had her first litter of baby greens. I posted pictures earlier this year of them breeding and after a long wait she produced a nice litter of young early Monday morning. In total there were 28 live, 1 stillborn, and 5 slugs. She ate several of the slugs as well as the still born but there were so many babies between the litter dam and the glass I could not slide it open for a photo. Here are three photos I get of mom and the young. Take care and will post more on them later. Jud McClanahan

The babies look really nice with great body weight and excellent color for newborns. I was so glad to see this as her sister dropped all slugs for me last year. These are the first documented true captive bred and born third generation greens that I am aware of in a private collection. This was also the fourth litter produced by Jud's large male. Excellent work Jud, and it is really great to add more captive reproduction data to the very small existing database for this rarely bred species.

Thank you all for the nice comments. Not everybody understands why Kelly and I do what we do. We love our Anacondas. Thanks again. Jud

Great job my friend! What a monster litter. It is fascinating to me how they eat the slugs and stillborn all the while leaving the newborns alone. With all of the "afterbirth" and slime in that cage you would think that it would be hard to determine one scent from another. To me it shows a little higher intelligence perhaps than one might attribute to a snake. Very neat! Take care and see you soon.
