Creating first terrarium

sooperscoot Oct 27, 2008 08:11 PM

Hi. I just got a corner 30gal tank that I want to make a terrarium out of for dart frogs. The only thing Im still pondering about is what kind of bottom to use, layered or false. I have a book on dart frogs and they say that the false bottom is the best choice in all cases. However after reading the forums most people say that false bottoms are only appropriate for terrariums with water features. Can someone clear this up for me?

It is a personal preference really, a cream/no cream deal. There is no right answer. I have used many different systems of drainage, and can honestly I do not prefer one over the other. The good thing about false bottoms is that they are a lot lighter than if you were to use gravel, or even a light drainage such as leca. If you have a waterfall it helps to use a false bottom, but you can easily avoid doing one by hiding the pump under a piece of driftwood or something along those lines.
